Behold Our God Will Come!

On the morning of August 27, 1883, the earth let out a prodigious noise when a volcano on the Indonesian island of Krakatoa erupted with a force that tore the island apart. The sound of the eruption was heard as far as 3000 miles away from Krakatoa. The British ship Norham Castle was 40 miles from Krakatoa at the time of the explosion and the ship’s captain wrote in his log, “So violent are the explosions that the eardrums of over half my crew have been shattered. My last thoughts are with my dear wife. I am convinced that the Day of Judgement has come.” Amazingly, for as many as five days after the explosion, weather stations around the globe observed this unprecedented spike in pressure recurring approximately every 34 hours, roughly the time it takes for sound to travel around the entire planet, indicating that the shock of the sound waves from Krakatoa circled the globe nearly four times in each direction! When we think about events that have worldwide effects, we think of catastrophes. It’s not only our nature to do so, but there’s also little in human experience to lead us to think otherwise. Krakatoa was an overwhelming sensory experience in a distressing way, but can we imagine a worldwide overwhelming sensory experience in a joyful and wonderful way?

We invite you to come join us this Sunday morning for our in-person worship service at Leptondale Bible Church in Newburgh, starting at 10:55 AM. For those unable to attend, our service can be viewed live on the church’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/leptondalebiblechurch. This Sunday, we’ll continue a series from Isaiah titled “In That Day: The Kingdom in Isaiah.” This Sunday’s message from Isaiah 35:1-10 is titled “Behold Our God Will Come!”

God bless!
