The Lord will be our everlasting light!
We have a tendency, sometimes, to get bogged down in God’s word to the extent that we fail to see the beauty of His glorious light. In his commentary on Isaiah 60 as a whole, Geoffrey Grogan touches on this tendency and encourages us to move past it with this Sunday’s passage, writing “We must say that there is a place for presenting the glorification by God of his people as a pure gift…It is the glory of the Lord that makes this vision what it is, for Zion’s glory is seen to be simply the reflection of his.” But in the journey to the matchless promises of Christ’s coming kingdom – “a pure gift” – the road of history for Israel and the world has often been dark. Back in Isaiah 8, Isaiah prophecies that a time would come soon for Israel when the people would live in a world of gloom and anguish and distress and thick darkness. Like the curse of darkness that the Lord brought upon the Egyptians, a darkness so thick and heavy that one could feel the weight of it, Israel would experience this in Isaiah’s day, but Isaiah promised then that the Christ would come and bring great light into the deep darkness of the people. We know that Jesus fulfilled this in a sense by His first coming but the ultimate fulfillment will be when He comes again. And once more, as we’ve seen in this sermon series, when Christ comes again, He will return to a world that will be as dark as it ever will be. But in that day, God’s people Israel will be given a wakeup call like none other! And oh, what a day that will be!
We invite you to come join us this Sunday morning for our in-person worship service at Leptondale Bible Church in Newburgh, starting at 10:55 AM. For those unable to attend, our service can be viewed live on the church’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/leptondalebiblechurch. This Sunday, we’ll conclude a series from Isaiah titled “In That Day: The Kingdom in Isaiah.” This Sunday’s message from Isaiah 60:1-22 is titled “The Lord will be our everlasting light!”
God bless!
