Waterless Springs and Mists Driven by a Storm
In the classic 1980 Goldie Hawn movie “Private Benjamin,” Judy Benjamin, a pampered well-to-do young woman, finds herself widowed on her wedding night. Heartbroken and directionless, she’s approached by a charming, but dishonest, army recruiter who uses a “bait and switch” tactic, promising Judy a glamorous and easy Army life, similar to a country club experience. However, upon arriving at basic training, Judy quickly realizes that the reality is vastly different from what was promised. Rather than the luxury condos she saw in the recruiting brochure, Private Benjamin gets the shock of all of the harsh rigors of basic training instructors. This is classic bait and switch. Judy was lured in with one enticing offer, only to discover the true nature of the commitment after she had already enlisted. In 2nd Peter thus far, Peter has been challenging his readers to live faithfully for the Lord with complete trust in Him and he does so with a sense of urgency because of the problem of false teachers in the church that Peter was contending against. But how great was this problem? Peter exposes it in vivid and graphic detail, but at the heart of the problem was the great danger of the classic bait and switch. Like waterless springs and mists driven by a storm, false teachers promise what appears to be something good but ultimately deliver the destruction and ruin they themselves are destined for. Could you spot a false teacher in your church and do you know what to look for?
