The Church of God
A good friend once gave me the sound advice to always ask the question “Why?” when stepping into a challenging situation. Always try to find out the full story of a matter to include the backstory which is often harder to get at. As we begin this sermon series on 1st Corinthians, we need to ask the question “Why?” Why did Paul write this letter? What was the backstory? Simply put, Paul had a deep connection and relationship with the church at Corinth over a prolonged period of time in a way that enabled Paul to keep tabs on the state of the church in Corinth. So, over time, Paul’s awareness of the deepening problems in the church at Corinth grew, leading him to write 1st Corinthians while he was in Ephesus. To this day, the church at Corinth in Paul’s day is often referred to by Christians as “The carnal Corinthians.” They had a whole host of spiritual problems, but their core problem was their failure to be the body of Christ God saved and called them to be by His grace. And a significant “tell” for this core problem was the disrespectful and sometimes hostile view that some in the church at Corinth had of Paul. This sermon series it titled “Written for our instruction,” which is taken from 1st Corinthians 10:11 where Paul was pointing out the spiritual lessons the Corinthians needed to learn from the bad examples of the people of Israel during their time in the wilderness. And in the very same way, “Written for our instruction” applies to the church now and always until Christ returns. So, are you willing to let lessons from the “Carnal Corinthians” be applied to you…to let its light of truth shine directly on you and stay there for an entire sermon series?
We invite you to come join us this Sunday morning for our in-person worship service at Leptondale Bible Church in Newburgh, starting at 10:55 AM. For those unable to attend, our service can be viewed live on the church’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/leptondalebiblechurch. This Sunday, we’ll begin a new sermon series from 1st Corinthians titled “Written for Our Instruction” with a message from 1st Corinthians 1:1-17 titled “The Church of God.”
God bless!
