How Will This Be?

Novelist Kurt Vonnegut once described one of the characters in his novels in a way that has parallels to the way Mary discovered her place in God’s plan of salvation. The character’s name was Kilgore, unique in Vonnegut’s writing as the only character the author ever created who actually sensed that he might be the creation of another human being. At one point Kilgore says, “The way things are going, all I can think of is that I’m a character in a book by somebody who wants to write about somebody who suffers all the time.” And behold! Vonnegut actually confirms Kilgore’s haunting suspicion as he steps beyond the role of narrator and into the book itself to appear before Kilgore in a bar. And as you can imagine, Kilgore found the experience to be overwhelming, disturbing, and discomforting as he sweats profusely in his creator’s presence. And in this face-to-face encounter, Kilgore discovers that his life is all due to the pen and whims of an author who made it all up for his own sake. Thankfully our creator doesn’t author our existence on a whim. His great desire is for our good and the great movements in our story can only be explained as His continuation of the great movements in His story. Yet it can still be very troubling to encounter the author and perfecter of our life of faith, especially when the details of your story are revealed as the author steps into your life and turns it upside down as He did with Mary! And so, one can’t help but sympathize with Mary as she asks, “How will this be?” Maybe we can consider Mary’s question together this Sunday 😊

We invite you to come join us this Sunday morning for our in-person worship service at Leptondale Bible Church in Newburgh, starting at 10:55 AM. For those unable to attend, our service can be viewed live on the church’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/leptondalebiblechurch.
